The IBS Burden

(1/6)

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders seen in clinical practice and represents a major economic and social burden in the US. Although IBS is not a life-threatening condition, it destroys quality of life of the IBS victim and their family. In moderate and severe cases, it consumes employer and insurer resources with a cost basis that has been reported to exceed Asthma care.* This burden typically lasts for the entire life of the patient once IBS appears.

25 - 40 Million Americans Suffer From IBS
10 – 15 million Americans suffer Moderate to Severe IBS***
$7547 Annual Direct Medical Cost of Care for IBS Patients (exceeds asthma $7170)*

IBS Patients Cost Reported $1300 more than non-IBS patients every year**
IBS accounts for $25 Billion Annually in Direct & Indirect Costs***
Approximately 12% of all Primary Care Visits are IBS related

Roughly 30% of all gastroenterological visits are IBS related
IBS is the second leading cause of missed workdays in the US
IBS Sufferers miss 3 times as many workdays as those without bowel symptoms (13.4 days vs. 4.9 days) and are more likely to report that they are too sick to work (11.3 % vs. 4.2). ****
