| -Taking The "Irritable" Out Of Irritable Bowel Syndrome- |
| What Causes IBS? (2/9)
A clear distinction must be made between “cause of IBS” as a disease versus the “cause of IBS” symptoms which are manifeastations of a disease which victims must live with.
| “The pathogenesis of IBS is multifactoral, involving abnormalities in the gut, immune system, enteric sensory and motor nerves, and the central nervous system.” | | | William H. Hassler, M.D. Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Medicine Associate Professor of Medicine University of Michigan Medical Center (From: Medical Clinics of North America, 2002 Nov;86 (6): 1525-51) |

The
specific causes of the underlying disease responsible for
the symptoms which doctors have agreed to label “Irritable
Bowel Syndrome” remain as yet unclear. There are many
physical events, and theories as to their causes, under independent
investigation.
What IS known are some of the mechanisms by which the body generates these symptoms doctors agree to label as “Irritable Bowel Syndrome”. So far these include:• |
non-allergic
immunologic food
or additive intolerances (“lost
oral tolerance”) |
| • | non-immunologic food intolerances | | • |
exaggerated response
of the body to chronic and acute
stress and anxiety which are associated
with the personal consequences of IBS symptoms |
